Although it was founded in the 14th century, this remarkable site has withstood pirate raids, earthquakes, and various occupations, playing a crucial role as a center of resistance during both the Ottoman period and World War II. The architecture here is a beautiful blend of Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman styles, showcasing a three-story building with a charming central courtyard, a towering bell tower that reaches 33 meters high, and sturdy defensive walls. Inside, visitors can wander through a museum filled with Byzantine icons, ancient manuscripts, and other historical treasures. Toplou is also known for its organic wines, olive oil, and honey, which visitors can sample during their visit. With its peaceful atmosphere, rich history, and cultural importance, Toplou Monastery is truly a must-see when exploring Crete.
