Dead Gorge-Kato Zakros

Exploring the Gorge of the Dead and the Tranquility of Kato Zakros

Its intriguing name comes from the Minoan burial sites found in the caves along its walls, giving us a fascinating peek into ancient burial customs. Hiking through the gorge is a moderately challenging adventure, typically taking around 3 hours and 16 minutes to finish.

The trail is part of the European E4 long-distance path and showcases a variety of plant life, towering limestone cliffs, and a peaceful stream that flows during the wetter months. The path is well-marked and family-friendly, especially during the summer when the weather is drier.

At the end of the gorge lies Kato Zakros, a tranquil coastal village celebrated for its archaeological importance and natural charm. Here, you can explore the ruins of a Minoan palace that dates back to around 1900 BC, which was a vital trading center thanks to its strategic location. Today, Kato Zakros remains largely untouched by mass tourism, providing visitors with a serene escape featuring its pebble beach, crystal-clear waters, and cozy traditional tavernas.
