Celebrating the rich musical heritage of Crete

Every summer, the Hamezi Festival lights up Hamezi, Sitia, celebrating the rich musical traditions of Crete. This annual event, put together by the Cultural Association of Hamezi along with local residents and friends from surrounding areas, invites musicians and music enthusiasts to come together for a day of learning, sharing, and connection.

During the day, the festival features seminars on music and traditional Cretan arts, taking place in charming village settings like courtyards and churchyards. As night descends, the village buzzes with spontaneous music sessions, where both locals and visitors fill the streets with live performances, singing, and the delightful sounds of traditional Cretan “kantades.”

The festival wraps up with two exciting public events: a concert in the courtyard of the Afenti Christou church and a festive closing celebration at the school. These gatherings truly showcase the festival’s lively spirit and the strong bonds within the community. It’s a beautiful mix of learning, sharing, and honoring the timeless traditions of Crete.
